The CPA profession is like a pizza

I love pizza. I think it is one the finest foods known to mankind. And as I was enjoying a particularly good pizza the other night, I started thinking how the CPA profession is like a pizza. First, there is the crust. In the CPA profession, this is our integrity and ethics. It is the code of ethics that binds all CPAs together in the profession, and like a pizza without a good crust, we fall apart without a good ethical base. The sauce is the education. There are many different flavors of sauce, but it is a key base to any good pizza, just like a good education is a key base to any CPA. The cheese is the CPA exam because no matter what your other ingredients are, a pizza is not a pizza without cheese, and a CPA is not a CPA without passing the CPA exam.

The slices are all of the major parts of the profession:

  • Financial Accounting
  • Management Accounting
  • Audit
  • Tax
  • Financial Planning
  • Advisory Services

Just as each slice can be a satisfying meal on its own, it’s a family feast when you get a whole pizza. Each piece of the profession is wonderful on its own, but all of them put together allow us to serve others in a way that adds up to more than the individual pieces.

Finally, the toppings are the experiences and specialties we gain along our career. Just as most kids start out liking just cheese pizza, most new CPAs start out as a plain base on top of which they build their career. Some people spend their whole career just specializing on one or two areas, while others take the super supreme route with all sorts of toppings…I mean experiences and specialties. Both routes can be equally as satisfying.

So next time you are enjoying your favorite pizza, just remember how it is like your CPA profession.
