Job Seekers: 5 Items of Value You Should Experience With Your Recruiter by Mark Goldman, CPAPosted: December 21, 2015
While finalizing a hiring process recently, we received this feedback from the candidate:
“Thank you. This is the perfect fit. I appreciate how closely you were able to match what I was looking for in a new job with an employer I wasn’t even aware of.”
The candidate has a background that is in high demand (Tax CPA) and has his choice of jobs in today’s market. We were able to streamline his search by only presenting him to employers that were a fit for his individual needs. On that note, I decided to write a blog entry on this topic.
When working with an external recruiter (a ‘headhunter’), there are some things you should expect if they are to most accurately match you with a position that meets your needs:
- In-Person Interview. If you both are in the same city, then they should want to meet you. While in-depth phone interviews are certainly possible, they don’t provide the same level of insight. By meeting in-person the communication is enhanced (facial expressions, etc) and therefore it’s easier for the recruiter to narrow down what the right fit may be.
- In-Person Employer Meetings. Hopefully the recruiter has met the employer as well. If so, they are much more likely to be able to ascertain whether or not personalities will be compatible. Also, they will have a more in-depth understanding of the position to be filled.
- More than a Job Description. Written job descriptions are helpful, but your recruiter should have more insight into what a job entails than simply what is on a job description. Oddly enough, many job descriptions don’t adequately reflect what the employer is hoping to hire. Your recruiter should have insight into what the employer ‘really wants’ in a new hire, not just what is listed on a job description that may not have been updated recently.
- Personalities. Your recruiter should also be able to assist with feedback on the personalities of the decision makers. This is helpful when preparing for the interview and makes the conversation more productive during the meeting as well.
- Desire for Feedback. A recruiter that is truly concerned about finding the right match will want feedback, and a lot of it. They likely will want to speak with you before and after every interview, and possibly between steps as well. The more open you can be about your feelings, the better job the recruiter will be able to do for you.
In a nutshell, working with a recruiter should be a partnership situation. Hopefully you win together; however, if for some reason the first round of interviews does not work out, then the knowledge they gain about your needs while going through the process should help them to more closely match you with an opportunity in the future.
